Geometrical Ornamentation at the Omayyad Mosque

There are 6 marble window grilles located on the west side of the courtyard in the Omayyad Mosque in Damascus. Claimed to be original elements in what is one of the oldest extant Islamic monuments, they may well represent one of the earliest usage of geometrical ornamentation in Islamic architecture.
Dura-Europos: A Pompeii in the Syrian Desert

A small garrison town, with the Semitic and Greek sounding name Dura-Europos, was by coincidence rediscovered by British mercenaries after World War I. Despite the inaccessibility of the place, archaeologists were able to excavate a minor city with a ruler-straight network of roads and square housing blocks.
