Dura-Europos: A Pompeii in the Syrian Desert

A small garrison town, with the Semitic and Greek sounding name Dura-Europos, was by coincidence rediscovered by British mercenaries after World War I. Despite the inaccessibility of the place, archaeologists were able to excavate a minor city with a ruler-straight network of roads and square housing blocks.
